Q: What is Gingivitis?

A: Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease. Its symptoms include red, swollen gums which bleed easily. Gingivitis is reversible if treated in the early stages; however, if it is allowed to progress into periodontitis, a far more advance form of gum disease, it will cause bone damage and will no longer be reversible. Gum disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults and has been linked to heart attacks and strokes. Make sure you visit your dentist regularly to catch gingivitis when it is still treatable.
