Q: What causes tooth discoloration?

A: There are several factors which can cause teeth to become discolored. Smoking or drinking a lot of coffee or tea can stain teeth over time. Certain medications may also affect tooth color if taken while teeth are still developing. Too much fluoride intake can also cause discoloration in a condition called fluorosis. However, discoloration is also a normal process associated with aging. As tooth enamel wears down naturally over time, teeth become duller and less white.
